Constituent Letter

Dear Senator Casey,

Hello, my name is Emily Flaherty and I am currently a senior at Haverford High School. First, I would like to thank you for you willingness to serve the public. As a constituent of your district I respectfully ask you to support the S 174: Healthy Lifestyles and Prevention America Act.

This act would improve the American's health and reduce health care costs by changing our health care system toward prevention, wellness, and health promotion. Over 33.9% of adults and 19.6% of kids are obese in the US. This illness causes many diseases which causes our health insurance cost to rise. If this Bill is passed regulations will be placed for food labels and advertising to kids, and promoting exercise will be enacted. This will lower obesity, diseases, and the cost of our health insurance.

So with this being said, please support S 174: Healthy Lifestyles and Prevention America Act. I encourage you to introduce this bill to the House and pass S 174 into law. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,
Emily Flaherty

Abortion Questions - Issue of the Week

1. Can we determine when  a child actually become a person?
2. What issues are taken into account when discussing abortion?
3. What would be the cons of taking away abortion?

Abortion is a very controversial subject. I could take my stand on this issue but I rather go broad and look at both sides. Not only do people argue whether it should be legal or not, they argue when a child actually becomes a person. "Some sources believe that the government has taken away the unalienable rights of the child by questioning when the child actually becomes a person and by recognizing the rights of the mother over the rights of the child. Some believe that the government should not have so much authority as to take away protection from the unborn." This is just one way to look at life in regards to government. Some also say a child is a person as conception and some say when the child is born and all in between. It is not realistic to think we will ever come up with a way to prove to all when a child is a person; therefore we cannot determine when a child actually become a human being.

When discussing abortion and whether is should be legalized or not, not only is when a child becomes a person researched but the issues the mother faces is also considered. Issues such as rape, financial state, and health of the mother is put into consideration. What if the mother was raped and doesn't want a child? What if the parents can't support the baby? What is the mothers life is at stake? All of these issues must be taken into account when discussing abortion. What if we just put restrictions and regulations on abortion? Such as if mothers life is at stake it is allowed, or if not enough money the government can offer money, if raped it can be used, etc.

However, if there are restrictions or abortion is considered illegal then there will be consequences. These would include illegal ways of abortion. For example, those 'back alley' stories would increase. Women would do anything and risk their lives to get an abortion illegally. This would also need to be taken into consideration.

So what can we do about abortion? The government has mixed feelings and has no idea what to do about it. A candidates view on abortion affects voters and who they vote for. There are too many pros and cons dealing with abortion that it is nearly impossible to please everyone.
